Emily and her best friend Stephanie are having a sleepover when they discover a monster, Murray, hiding in her closet. Determined to catch him, they recruit their friends—sarcastic and skeptical Kelly, vain Mary, studious Brain, tomboy Tara, and book-loving Megan—despite the teasing of Emily’s big brother and his friends. What they don’t realize is that Murray is more scared of them than they are of him; he doesn’t want to cause trouble, just to try out Emily’s new video game. Unfortunately, his boss, the Dream King, has him on probation for slacking off on the job, since every monster is assigned to watch over a child, not play with their things.
